Nestainer CES

Purpose of CES:

The CES was designed to replace the use of bungee cords on Nestainers for safety purposes. The following picture shows a Nestainer (blue steel racks) with a CES kit (left) and one with a bungee cord (right).

The CES Kit:

The CES kit is comprised of three main components:

11. The Cable Assemblies: this component is a length of coated steel cable that, on one end, is looped through the grommet of a coupling link with safety closure and reattached to itself with a compression sleeve. The other end of the same piece of coated steel cable is looped through a projecting loop that is attached to a flat metal plate that is made in one piece and then reattached to the same piece of cable with a compression sleeve. The two compression sleeves are covered with a rubberized piece of tubing to encase the ends of the two cable loops for safety. The assembly is pictured to the left, and there is typically two per opening. These assemblies close the open end end of the Nestainer to keep materials in place. The next component is what keeps the cable assemblies in the open position.

2. The Mag-Lok: this component is what keeps the cable assemblies in the open position on the Nestainer. The mag-lok consists of 3 parts. A round doughnut shaped magnet that is encased in steel on all sides except for one. There is a screw hole centered in the magnets steel casing. This allows the magnet to be attached to the Nestainer’s open side with a case hardened self drilling screw. The screw passes through a round steel tubular spacer and clamps the magnet to the open side of the Nestainer.

3. The closed position lock. This component is a projecting loop that attaches to a flat metal plate. These pieces are attached to the Nestainers open side, but they are on the opposite side that the cable assemblies are attached. These parts are what holds the CES in the closed position

All components that make up a kit for one Nestainer:

The way that all of these components work together will be shown in the following pictures and a video. There are two different configurations of the attachment of the CES kit. One will be shown on blue Nestainers and the other will be shown on red Nestainers.

The main purpose of the CES is to phase out the use of black rubber bungees with steel hooks, for a safer way to keep boxes and other products from falling out of the nestainers while they are moved around the warehouse.
